Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious trophy on 14 separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
